E&E Construction marks two decades in environmental industry 

Engineering & Environmental Construction Inc. (Huntingdon Beach, Calif.), a provider of environmental and civil construction services, is celebrating its 20th year of operations. Founded in 2006, E&E has evolved from a niche remediation firm into a single-source service provider, managing projects from initial site remediation to large-scale civil construction. The firm’s client base includes leading environmental consulting firms, private developers, industrial manufacturers, and government agencies. “We’ve been so focused on our mission that this anniversary almost snuck up on us,” said James Harding, COO and co-owner. “Coming off another record-breaking year, we aren’t just looking back at the last two decades – we’re using this 20th year as a springboard. We’ve already begun executing a clear five-year plan that involves further diversification of our capabilities and deepening our footprint in the West.”

Alliance Technical Group broadens air emissions testing capabilities in Canada

Alliance Technical Group (Decatur, Alabama) announced the acquisition of Protocol2 Air Sciences Inc. (Edmonton, Alberta), a Canadian environmental consulting firm specializing in industrial source emission testing and air quality services. Founded in 2003, Protocol2 Air Sciences has expertise in industrial air emissions testing and environmental consulting. Over the past two decades, the company has completed more than 3,000 projects, supporting industrial facilities with stack emissions testing, air monitoring, and regulatory compliance assessments. Alliance Technical Group provides environmental testing, monitoring, and compliance services. The firm announced its acquisition by Blackstone Energy Transition Partners in January 2026.

Spheros acquires KP Environmental, expanding planning and permitting capabilities

Spheros Environmental (Denver, Colo.) announced the acquisition of KP Environmental Inc. (Encinitas, Calif.), a firm with expertise in environmental and natural resource planning, impact analysis, permitting and regulatory strategy, compliance, and stakeholder and public engagement. “KP Environmental brings the kind of practical NEPA and CEQA planning and regulatory expertise that complements the scientific capabilities across Spheros. Their team has built a strong reputation for managing complex environmental review processes and supporting power, data centers, and energy transition projects through challenging permitting and construction compliance,” said Spheros CEO Andra Kidd. It is Spheros’ ninth acquisition.  

Carollo to manage construction of Nevada’s first water purification and reuse facility

Truckee Meadows Water Authority (TMWA) has selected Carollo Engineers (Walnut Creek, Calif.) to provide construction management services for the advanced purified water facility (APWF) undertaken by OneWater Nevada, a regional collaboration led by the City of Reno and TMWA. The $200-million facility will be Nevada’s first water purification and reuse project and involves upgrades to the Reno-Stead Water Reclamation Facility, construction of the new APWF, an export pump station, conveyance pipelines, finished water storage tanks, and injection, monitoring and extraction wells. The APWF will utilize an innovative ozone-biological-carbon based treatment system to produce purified water meeting state and federal drinking water standards. 

BluMetric’s recurring water-testing services get a boost

BluMetric Environmental Inc. (Ottawa, Ontario), a publicly traded engineering, water technology, and environmental consulting firm, has closed the acquisition of Whitteker Environmental Services Inc. (Brinston, Ontario) for a C$1,250,000 purchase price. Whitteker provides water and wastewater system operations and testing services. The acquisition expands BluMetric’s recurring water testing services with marquee clients like municipalities and adds capabilities in Eastern Ontario. Whitteker’s approximate revenues stood at C$950,000 for the year ended December 31, 2025, based on unaudited figures. BluMetric’s revenue in fiscal year 2025 was C$62.6 million, up by approximately 80% year-over-year. The company has 335 employees across 16 offices and three manufacturing facilities.

Barge to design new water reclamation facility in Georgia

Barge Design Solutions (Columbus, Ga.), an employee-owned engineering company, is continuing its work with Columbus Water Works as the prime engineering consultant on the new South Columbus Water Reclamation Facility, the largest water infrastructure investment in the utility’s history. The existing outdated treatment facility is projected to exceed its limits within the next decade. Its replacement will have a permitted flow capacity of 65 million gallons per month, enough to serve the region for decades. Barge has formed an integrated project team with Hazen and Sawyer and Freese and Nichols, bringing together complementary design expertise. Design is expected to conclude in late 2027, with construction completed by the end of 2031. Barge has 24 offices in the United States and more than 650 team members based in the Southeast.

Morrison-Maierle acquires QRS Consulting

Morrison?Maierle (Helena, Mont.), a 100% employee?owned engineering firm providing civil, mechanical, electrical, and structural engineering, in addition to surveying, planning, and environmental science services, announced the acquisition of QRS Consulting (Boise, Idaho). QRS Consulting serves clients across the natural resources, fisheries, hydropower, and civil engineering sectors. Founded in 1945 in Montana, Morrison-Maierle has more than 350 employee-owners in five states. Morrissey Goodale advised Morrison-Maierle in the transaction.

 

European Investment Bank picks Stantec for environmental advisory role

Stantec (Edmonton, Alberta) announced it has been selected by the European Investment Bank to deliver advisory support for Climate Adaptation, Resilience and Nature?based Solutions in Environmental Sectors—a major initiative under the European Union’s InvestEU Advisory Hub. The assignment will help accelerate public environmental investments in the EU. Supported by a broad pool of technical and country-specific professionals, Stantec’s multidisciplinary team from Belgium, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Italy will apply internationally recognized methodologies, including, cost-benefit analysis, scenario modelling, and multicriteria analysis.

Brown and Caldwell partners with Lantern to expand digital solutions for water utilities

Brown and Caldwell (Walnut Creek, Calif.) announced a strategic partnership with the data and AI consulting firm Lantern to give water utilities access to scalable, advanced digital capabilities to optimize operations and customer service. Lantern’s designation as a Microsoft Solutions Partner provides utilities with direct access to enhanced Microsoft tools and capabilities. The partnership aims to address common utility performance challenges. “By delivering tailored low-code applications and integration solutions, the partnership can help utilities streamline workflows, enhance cybersecurity measures, and ensure that essential operational and customer information flows reliably across systems,” said Chris Puccio, enterprise technology consulting lead at Brown and Caldwell.

Weston awarded contract for residential soil cleanup

Weston Solutions Inc. (West Chester, Pa.) has been awarded a $100 million remedial action contract by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Omaha District under an inter-agency agreement with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 8. Activities under the five-year contract will include the remediation of primarily residential properties in East Helena, Montana. The work will address soils impacted by lead and arsenic from a smelter operation active from 1888 through 2001. Weston’s locally based property coordination team, supported by an East Helena based project office, will serve as the primary point of contact for residents. Weston’s team, including partner Olympus Technical Services, will support construction activities. 

GFL Environmental announces acquisition of Secure Waste Infrastructure

GFL Environmental Inc. (Vaughan, Ontario) has agreed to buy Secure Waste Infrastructure Corp. (Calgary, Alberta) in a deal worth approximately C$6.4 billion ($4.33 billion). Secure operates a large-scale, diversified waste management platform in Western Canada and North Dakota through a vertically integrated network of 80 locations, including 12 landfills, 55 waste treatment facilities, 12 recycling facilities, 98 injection wells and five transfer stations. “The acquisition of Secure will provide us with a highly complementary network of permitted waste processing and disposal assets that will densify our footprint in Western Canada, significantly enhance our scale and expand our ability to offer customers a full suite of waste management services,” said Patrick Dovigi, founder and CEO of GFL. The deal follows GFL’s recent acquisition of Texas-based Frontier Waste Solutions for roughly $900 million. In 2025, GFL spun off its environmental services business for an enterprise value of C$8 billion.

STOMP to investigate microplastics and human health

The Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced a $144-million national program to create the definitive toolbox for measuring, researching, and removing microplastics and nanoplastics in the human body. The program is called Systematic Targeting of MicroPlastics (STOMP). “Americans deserve clear answers about how microplastics in their bodies affect their health,” said HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. “Through ARPA-H’s STOMP program, we will measure microplastic exposure, identify sources of risk, and develop targeted solutions to reduce it.” 

New species discovered in Australia’s Coral Sea 

Marine taxonomists have identified more than 110 fish and invertebrate species from the Coral Sea that are new to science, with that number likely to exceed 200 as more cryptic species are identified. Brought together by CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, and The Nippon Foundation-Nekton Ocean Census, the taxonomists identified fish and invertebrates collected late last year by scientists on board CSIRO research vessel Investigator. So far, standout discoveries in the Coral Sea Marine Park, Australia, include two rays, one deepwater catshark and one chimaera, in addition brittle stars, crabs, sea anemones and sponges.
