Tetra Tech reports strong fourth quarter

Backlog at the end of the fourth quarter was a record $3.24 billion, up 5% year-over-year and up 6% sequentially. “In just the fourth quarter, we won $69 million in contracts for renewable energy and power consulting services, continuing our differentiated leadership in this market,” said Chair and CEO Dan Batrack in an earnings call. “No doubt fiscal year 2020 was the most complicated, the most varied with the pandemic, with oil prices going to negative, with the largest single unemployment drops, followed by quick recoveries…. I was glad to see that revenues held up unbelievably well. We saw growth through the second half, all-time high earnings per share, all-time high backlog, all-time cash generation.” Tetra Tech’s revenue for fiscal 2020 totaled $3 billion compared to $3.1 billion in FY 2019.

ICF (Fairfax, Va.) reported total revenue of $360 million for the third quarter ended Sep. 30, 2020, 3.6% below the $373.9 million reported in the third quarter of 2019, due primarily to lower pass-through revenues. Service revenue increased 3% to $265 million year on year, led by programs for federal government clients and energy-related advisory and implementation work for commercial clients. It was ICF’s highest third quarter for contract wins in the company’s history, with $792 million in awarded contracts, including strategic wins aligned with growth catalysts identified by ICF: IT modernization/digital transformation, public health, commercial energy, and disaster management.

Perovskite solar cells to revolutionize sector

Technology advancements in perovskite solar cells are transforming the solar industry, according to recent analysis by Frost & Sullivan. “Perovskite solar cells have demonstrated significant progress in recent years owing to the rapid increase in operational efficiency, from approximately 3% in 2006 to over 25% in 2020,” said Abhigyan Tathagat, senior research analyst. “Going forward, the materials can be easily synthesized, which make them a promising futuristic solar cell technology for producing efficient and low-cost photovoltaics.” A perovskite is any material with a crystal structure similar to the mineral called perovskite. A perovskite solar cell includes a perovskite-structured compound as the light-harvesting active layer.

Agreement reached on Klamath River dam removals

PacifiCorp and the States of California and Oregon have agreed to provide additional resources and support for dam removal through the Klamath Hydroelectric Settlement Agreement (KHSA). The agreement was signed with the Yurok and Karuk tribes and sets terms for the removal of four antiquated Klamath River dams owned by PacifiCorp. It comes after decades of effort by tribes, resource agencies, and conservation groups to restore the Klamath River and its runs of salmon and steelhead fish, according to Trout Unlimited (TU), a signatory to the KHSA; TU has worked closely with Klamath stakeholders over the past 20 years to resolve water management challenges in the Klamath Basin and restore habitat, fish passage, and water quality in Klamath Lake and tributaries.

Morrisey Goodale expects record year for many A/E firms

The architecture and engineering (A/E) industry is having a banner year, and many firms will see record sales, revenues and profits in 2020, according to Morrisey Goodale. Worries have persisted about the short-term outlook—one worry among CEOs being an expected slowdown or erosion of backlog in the third or fourth quarter 2020. But based on backlogs, “plenty of A/E and environmental firms around the country are expecting the boom to continue deep into 2021…. Stantec, Tetra Tech, NV5, and Atlas Technical Consultants all reported either record or close to record backlogs heading into the New Year. And these tailwinds are playing out throughout the industry.”
