Dong takes full ownership of Hornsea wind farm

In a transaction with joint-venture partner SMart Wind, itself a joint venture between Mainstream Renewable Power and Siemens Financial Services, Denmark’s DONG Energy has acquired the remaining 66.66% interest in the U.K.’s Hornsea Project One offshore wind farm that it did not already own. The Hornsea wind farm will cover are area of 407 square kilometers about 120 kilometers off the Yorkshire coast and will have a capacity of 1.2 GW, making it the largest offshore wind farm in the world once it is completed, according to DONG Energy. “We will now continue on our own to develop the project towards a final investment decision,” said Samuel Leupold, executive vice president of DONG Energy Wind Power. “The size of the project and the excellent wind conditions at the site, together with our strong focus on cost, will make Hornsea One an important milestone towards the €100 per megawatt-hour target. While the project is huge in size, it can be realized with technology which DONG Energy masters, though no one else has ever built offshore wind in that scale so far from the coast.”
