Russia approves nuclear deal with Jordan

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has approved a draft agreement with the nation of Jordon under which the two countries will collaborate in the construction of Jordan’s first nuclear power plant. Under the terms of the agreement, Rusatom Overseas, a subsidiary of Russia’s Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation, will work with the Atomic Energy Commission of Jordan in the development, construction, and operation of two reactors with capacities of 1,000 MW each. The first of the two plants is expected to be operational in 2024, the second in 2026. The deal represents the latest in recent moves by the Russian government to expand the reach of its nuclear development activities, following an agreement signed earlier this year to construct two reactors for KKNPP in Tamil Nadu, India.
