Energy Recovery wins UAE desal contract

Energy Recovery Inc. (San Leandro, CA) has received a contract to supply its PX Pressure Exchanger technology for installation at the Mirfa “mega” desalination plant in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE). The PX technology will help reduce energy consumption at the Mirfa plant, which will have the capacity to process 136,000 cubic meters of water per day. According to Energy Recovery, which has won three previous contracts to supply its PX technology to desalination plants in the UAE, power demand in Abu Dhabi is growing at a rate of more than 10% annually, while water consumption is expected to increase from 880 million gallons per day currently to 1.15 billion gallons per day by 2021 as a result of rapid population growth and industrial development. The PX technology is already helping desalination plants in Abu Dhabi save more than 470 million kilowatt-hours of energy and $47 million in costs, according to the company. “As water and energy demand increase around the globe, more countries are looking to our pressure exchange technology to provide cost-effective and energy-efficient solutions,” said Tom Rooney, Energy Recovery’s CEO.
