Enerkem to enter Chinese markets

Enerkem, Inc. (Montreal, Quebec), developer of a technology for converting waste to biofuels and chemicals, has signed agreements with Chinese entities to build waste conversion facilities in China. In a deal signed with Shanghai Environmental Group Co. Ltd., a solid waste management subsidiary of Shanghai Chengtou Holding Co. Ltd., Enerkem and Shanghai Environmental will jointly build facilities for converting municipal solid waste to biofuels and chemicals. The final business structure and sites for the facilities are still being discussed. Enerkem also signed an agreement with Shanghai Marine Diesel Engine Research Institute (SMDERI) under which the two parties will jointly build a waste-to-biofuels facility in China. The deals were both signed as part of a Quebec-sponsored trade mission to China. “Mounting waste volumes are a challenge everywhere but an even more pressing issue in China,” said Vincent Chornet, president and CEO of Enerkem. Speaking of the deal with Shanghai Environmental Group, he commented, “our value proposition makes sound business sense for industrial groups, and this project partnership in China is a prime example of the strong export potential of Enerkem’s technology.”
