Con Edison, NYSERDA to reduce electricity demand in NYC

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on April 25 that the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has formed a partnership with utility Con Edison to reduce the electricity demand in New York City by as much as 125 MW. Under the $285 million program, NYSERDA and Con Edison will implement projects designed to increase energy efficiency, reduce demand during peak hours, and deploy combined heat and power (CHP) systems at various sites in New York City and Westchester County. The two partners are aiming to complete the energy efficiency and demand reduction projects by June 1, 2016, and the CHP projects by May 1, 2016. “In this new extreme weather reality, New Yorkers need a 21st century energy grid that won’t leave them in the dark, when big storms strike,” Governor Cuomo said. “This partnership between the state and Con-Edison will help make our electric grid more resilient and protect businesses and residents from unexpected power outages.”
