Westervelt gets go-ahead for Alabama wetlands restoration

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has approved a plan by Westervelt Ecological Services (Auburn, AL) to restore wetlands and streams on 237 acres in Alabama’s St. Clair County. The restoration effort will generate credits for the Canoe Creek Mitigation Bank (CCMB) in the Middle Coosa watershed, which the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has identified as the largest and most biologically diverse sub-watershed of the Mobile River Basin. Activities will encompass the restoration of the structure and function of 6,374 linear feet of stream and riparian buffer, including hardwood forests and forested slopes. The Coosa River Basin is home to 147 species of fish, including the Coldwater Darter, the Coosa Darter, the Holiday Darter, and the Pygmy Sculpin, all of which are unique to the basin.
