Report: 2012 environmental consulting market at $27.4 billion

The global market for environmental consulting services grew by 4% in 2012 to reach $27.4 billion U.S., led by 22 firms that accounted for nearly 44% of that total, according to a recent report by environmental market research and publishing firm Environment Analyst (London, U.K.). The top 10 firms ranked in terms of gross global environmental consulting revenue consisted, in order, of CH2M HILL, Tetra Tech, URS Corp., Golder Associates, AECOM Technology, Environmental Resources Management (ERM), ARCADIS, AMEC Environment & Infrastructure, MWH Global, and Cardno Ltd. The 22 top firms outperformed the market as a whole, enjoying 6.1% growth in their environmental consulting revenue, including approximately 5% organic growth and about 1.1% growth through acquisition. “The economic regional disparities worldwide have forced the sector to be both more responsive and adaptable to often uncertain and fast-developing market conditions within their home markets and overseas,” commented Liz Trew, editor of Environment Analysts’ Global Market Intelligence Services and co-author of the report. “Geographic diversity remains the buzzword, and internationalization, often in line with multinational clients, continues to re-shape the industry.”
