CH2M HILL to streamline San Diego water system

The Public Utilities Department of the city of San Diego has awarded a contract to CH2M HILL (Denver, CO) to streamline the city’s water and wastewater operations. Under the contract, the value of which was not disclosed, CH2M HILL will conduct a comprehensive operational optimization study of the system to identify the opportunities to reduce energy use and to make other improvements in water production and distribution, chemical use, data management, wastewater sludge processing and disposal, staffing, and warehouse practices and procedures. San Diego’s water system is regarded as one of the largest and most complex in the United States, involving the import of about 90% of the water from outside the area and including more than 3,300 miles of water lines, 49 water pumping stations, 130-plus pressure zones, and more than 260 million gallons of water storage capacity in standpipes, elevated tanks, and concrete and steel reservoirs.
