Landfill volumes boost Waste Connections’ financials

Higher volumes of municipal solid waste (MSW) going to the company’s landfills helped boost second-quarter revenue for Waste Connections, Inc. (The Woodlands, TX) to $489.4 million, up from $410.7 million for the second quarter of 2012. The company reported adjusted net income of $57.8 million, or 47 cents per share, for the second quarter of 2013 compared with $48.2 million, or 39 cents per share, one year earlier. “”Solid waste landfill volumes increased [by] double digits, with municipal solid waste volumes up 14% in the quarter—the strongest increase we’ve experienced in several years,” said Waste Connections CEO Ronald Mittelstaedt during an analysts’ conference call. “Put simply, volume recovery for the solid waste sector, which typically lags an improving economy, is finally materializing.”
