Feds approve $200 million sewage tunnel for Honolulu

The city of Honolulu, Hawaii, has received the approval of the federal government to build a $200 million, 3.2-mile tunnel to transfer sewage from the Kaneohe treatment plant near the city’s Bayview Golf Course to the Kailua Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant in Aikahi. The city had been sued by community groups over discharges from the existing sewer line, which has suffered damages and has allowed groundwater and stormwater to enter and overload the sewer system. Construction is expected to begin in December 2013, and completion of the new sewage line is scheduled for 2018.
