Hyundai/Acciona wins $347 million wastewater project

   A consortium consisting of South Korea’s Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co. and Spain’s Acciona Agua S.A. has received a $347 million contract from Colombian utility EPM to build and operate the Bello wastewater treatment plant in the suburbs of Medellin, Colombia’s second-largest city. The plant is designed to treat 430,000 tons of wastewater per day and represents the second phase of EPM’s $478 million Medellin River Sanitation Plan. Construction work on the wastewater treatment plant is expected to begin later this year and to be completed in 2015. The Hyundai/Acciona consortium beat 11 competing bidders from Colombia, South Korea, Brazil, Uruguay, Spain, and Mexico for the job. The Inter-American Development Bank is providing a $450 million loan to support the Medellin River Sanitation Plan.
