Consortium to build $667 waste-to-energy plant in Florida

A consortium consisting of CDM (Cambridge, MA), BE&K Construction Co. LLC (Birmingham, AL), and Babcock & Wilcox Power Generation Group Inc. (Barberton, OH) has received a contract from the Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County in Florida, to design and build a $667 waste-to-energy plant. The plant will be able to process 3,000 tons of municipal solid waste per day and will have an electricity-generating capacity of 95 megawatts (MW). The facility will also incorporate several “sustainability” features, including zero-waste discharge, photovoltaic solar panels, and rainwater harvesting capability. The Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach claims that the facility will have the lowest emissions of any waste-to-energy plant in the United States. The project is currently in the design phase; construction is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2012 and to be completed in 2015.
