CH2M HILL-B&W West Valley wins $333 million DOE cleanup contract

CH2M HILL-B&W West Valley, LLC, a consortium consisting of CH2M HILL Constructors (Denver, CO), Babcock & Wilcox Technical Services Group, Inc. (Charlotte, NC), and Environmental Chemical Corp. (Burlingame, CA), has received a contract from the U.S. Department of Energy to conduct the next phase of decommissioning at DOE’s West Valley Demonstration Project facility near West Valley, New York. Under the contract, which is valued at $333.4 million, the consortium will clean up and decommission various facilities at the former nuclear fuel-processing facility, where reusable uranium and plutonium was separated from spent fuel from commercial and federal nuclear reactors. A 60-day period to transition from the existing contractor, West Valley Environmental Services, began on July 1. West Valley Environmental Services was in the process of reducing its work force to 266 employees as federal stimulus funds ran out. The new contractor has not indicated the size of its work force.
