Chartwell: Landfill Gates Rates Up 30% over Decade
Gate rates at municipal solid waste landfills have risen by 28% from 2001 through 2009 and are likely to reach 30% over the full decade, according to data compiled by Chartwell Solid Waste Digest (San Diego, CA). The gate rate increased by 2% during 2009 even in the midst of the financial crisis, prompting Chartwell to project the 30% increase for the 2001-2010 period. The average gate rate nation-wide was $34 per ton in 2001, and Chartwell’s just completed analysis of year-long surveys show that the average national gate rate is now slightly more than $43 per ton. Chartwell advised that the gate rates for specific states vary widely, and that even within some states, the gate rates can vary considerably at different landfills. Chartwell said that it plans to compile reports on the gate rate trends for all 50 states.
