Description
Climate Change and Community Planning 2017: Climate change adaptation and GHG mitigation are slowly being integrated into long-term land-use planning and development, although the pace of this integration varies dramatically. This edition of CCBJ is focused on the United States and Canada, and its is becoming clear that GHG mitigation figures into a great deal of planning activity in California, Ontario and a few other progressive states and provinces—as well as in many local government jurisdictions that mandate sustainable urban design and transit-oriented development. Yet as a feature article on California story reveals, moving the needle on transportation-related GHGs continues to be an immense challenge.
Adaptation is becoming a major driver in coastal communities threatened by sea level rise, therefore, Climate Change and Community Planning is crucial for these communities. Coverage in this edition of the Bay Area, South Florida and Hampton Roads show how cities in the eye of the SLR storm are using planning tools to begin the very long process of adaptation.
