EPA awards Tetra Tech $25M water quality and ecological monitoring contract

Tetra Tech Inc. (Pasadena, Calif.) announced that it has been awarded a $25-million, single-award contract by the U.S. EPA Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Water for high-end technical services to assess and manage risks to human health and aquatic ecosystems. Under the five-year contract, Tetra Tech will support the EPA, states, and communities in attaining and maintaining clean water resources for drinking, fishing, and recreation. Tetra Tech will provide risk assessments, advanced data analytics, and economic analyses to support water quality standard setting; monitor chemical contaminants in fish and microbial pathogens in surface waters to inform prevention and remediation strategies that reduce risks to human health; and facilitate community input and knowledge sharing with state and local governments.

Delaware contracts EA for $1.8M ecological restoration

The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control has selected EA (Hunt Valley, Md.) to provide habitat restoration at three sites under the Christina-Brandywine River Remediation Restoration Resilience initiative. Valued at more than $1.8 million, the work encompasses design, engineering, permitting, and construction phase services. “EA’s restoration ideology is to create self-improving, self-maintaining ecosystems using the basic ecologic and geologic building blocks appropriate to the project sites,” said Amy Hunt, EA’s project manager. With more than five decades of experience in the mid-Atlantic region, EA has completed more than 500 projects in Delaware.

Alliance Technical Group expands source emissions testing in Western Canada

Alliance Technical Group (Decatur, Ala.), a provider of environmental testing, monitoring, and compliance services, announced the acquisition of Emissions Test Group (ETG, Edmonton, Alberta), a provider of industrial source emissions testing. The acquisition strengthens Alliance’s presence in the Canadian environmental services market while adding an experienced field team with expertise across a broad range of emissions testing disciplines. Founded in 2012, ETG delivers emissions testing services to industrial clients across Western Canada. Its work includes source emissions testing, including manual stack surveys, CEMS commissioning and performance tests, gas turbine DLN tuning, pollution-control efficiency and guarantee testing and process optimization studies.

Verdantas announces two acquisitions in July

Verdantas (Tampa, Fla.) announced the acquisition of American Engineering & Environmental Consultants (AEEC, Reston, Va.), a technology-driven firm with capabilities in digital transformation, environmental engineering, and advanced data solutions. The acquisition builds on Verdantas’ continued investment in AI and custom digital solutions that support its core engineering and environmental services. Founded more than 30 years ago, AEEC has experience in environmental remediation, compliance and long-term monitoring, in addition to digital capabilities such as data analytics, automation, and applied artificial intelligence. Verdantas was also joined by En-power Group (New York, N.Y.), an engineering firm specializing in energy efficiency, decarbonization, sustainability, and regulatory compliance. James Soldano, managing partner at Sterling Investment Partners, noted, “AEEC brings a differentiated set of capabilities to Verdantas, particularly in how they integrate digital solutions with engineering and environmental services.”

New York data centers face moratorium while awaiting new GEIS

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has signed an Executive Order to create America’s first moratorium on new hyperscale data centers while it establishes a strong regulatory framework for data center development. Earlier this year, the Governor directed the Department of Public Service (DPS) to require data centers either to pay more for energy or supply their own. The Governor is now also directing DPS to develop a Generic Environmental Impact Statement (GEIS) for data centers to assess the potential impacts of data centers on energy demand, water use and quality, and air quality. During the development of this GEIS, which will take up to a year, a moratorium will be in place. The construction ban applies to data centers that use 50 megawatts ?or more of power.

Private water companies invest $6.8B to improve water quality and reliability

America’s 15 largest regulated private water companies collectively invested nearly $6.8 billion in 2025 to improve infrastructure and enhance the safety and reliability of water and wastewater in their communities, according to the National Assn. of Water Companies (NAWC). Over the past 10 years, more than $43.5 billion have been invested by these companies, NAWC stated. The 2025 investment figure represents “substantial increase over prior years and reflects the sector’s sustained dedication to modernizing the nation’s critical water systems.”

ERM maps decarbonization for the phosphate and potash industry

Sustainability consultancy ERM (London, UK) announced the publication of a practical, science-based guide to reducing emissions across the global potash and phosphate fertilizer industry. The roadmap describes how the sector that underpins global food production can cut emissions in line with the Paris Agreement while preserving affordability, supply resilience and food security. The roadmap covers greenhouse gas emissions from raw materials and production to transport, trade and fertilizer use in agriculture. The roadmap was developed by ERM in collaboration with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the International Fertilizer Assn., with support from Systemiq.

Environmental 360 Solutions marks milestone in North American growth strategy

Environmental 360 Solutions (E360S, Aurora, Ontario), a fast-growing provider of waste management, environmental, and recycling and circular-economy services, announced its entry into the United States following the acquisition of Marcotte Disposal Co. (Port Huron, Mich.). “Our vision extends far beyond a single acquisition,” said Donato Ardellini, founder and CEO of E360S. “The United States represents a significant opportunity for E360S. We have identified numerous attractive markets and businesses that align with our long-term strategy, and we intend to continue scaling our North American footprint through disciplined acquisitions and organic growth.”

WSP in Australia agrees to acquire e2m

WSP in Australia (Sydney, NSW) has entered into an agreement to acquire e2m, a Queensland-based ecology and environmental consultancy with more than 60 employees. e2m offers terrestrial ecology, biodiversity offsets, environmental analytics, spatial services, and approvals and compliance support. “This proposed acquisition of e2m is aligned with our 2025-2027 Australian Strategic Activation Plan to strengthen our position in core markets and expand capability to support high-growth sectors,” said Greg Kane, president and managing director of WSP in Australia.

DOE selects Core Natural Resources to pursue critical mineral and material extraction from coal

Consol Innovations LLC, a subsidiary of Core Natural Resources (Canonsburg, Pa.), has been selected for a multi-million-dollar grant from U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation. The award falls under DOE’s funding opportunity titled Mines & Metals Capacity Expansion – Piloting Byproduct Critical Minerals and Materials Recovery at Domestic Industrial Facilities. The company plans to use funding to develop a pilot-scale facility for the extraction of rare earth elements and critical materials from coal waste tailings sourced from Core’s Pennsylvania Mining Complex. Funding is contingent on completion of the negotiation process with DOE.

Parsons integrates four core technologies for PFAS remediation

Parsons Corporation (Chantilly, Va.) announced the expansion of its comprehensive solutions to mitigate the impacts PFAS on the environment. At the core of Parsons’ PFAS portfolio are four primary solutions: Hot In Situ Chemical Oxidation (Hot ISCO), Catalyzed Ultraviolet PFAS Destruction (Catalyzed UV), Thermal Desorption, and Aqueous Film-Forming Foam (AFFF) Cleanout services. According to Parsons, these four pillars together provide a comprehensive PFAS management offering that spans environmental investigation, removal from the consumer product stream, active in-situ and ex-situ destructive PFAS remediation and long-term stewardship.

Jacket pulls drinking water from thin air

Engineers at The University of Texas at Austin have developed a jacket that harvests drinking water directly from the air. The technology could benefit anyone without easy access to drinking water, from hikers and campers to agricultural workers, emergency responders and soldiers. The textile incorporated into the jacket collects moisture and funnels it to detachable harvesting units. Those units are placed in a foldable collector piece and heated to produce the water. The jacket produced between 400 and 900 milliliters of drinkable water per day, depending on humidity.
