AtkinsRéalis (Montreal, Canada) and Oxford Robotics Institute (ORI, Oxford, UK), the University of Oxford’s center for robotics and artificial intelligence, announced a new global partnership to accelerate the adoption of autonomous robotic solutions for the nuclear and energy sectors. This collaboration builds on joint work in the UK, where ORI systems have been integrated into AtkinsRéalis robotics platforms for autonomous navigation, advanced mapping, and hotspot detection at nuclear sites. The new partnership expands this work internationally, focusing on reducing the time people need to spend in hazardous environments while enhancing capability and efficiency. “This partnership allows us to rapidly move autonomous robotics from research to operational deployment on nuclear power plants around the world,” said Sam Stephens, head of digital for nuclear, at AtkinsRéalis.
WRF publishes Hazen-led quarry lakes study
The Water Research Foundation (WRF) has published a report titled Evolution and Characterization of Water Quality in Quarry Lakes based on a project led by investigators from Hazen and Sawyer (New York, N.Y.). The project evaluated long-term water quality trends in quarry lake systems in the United States and compared them to natural lakes and reservoirs. The investigation yielded insights into the quality of quarry and gravel pit lake water, and strategies for using these artificial lakes for water storage. Findings will help utilities and water professionals evaluate the potential of reclaimed quarries and gravel pits for offline water storage. According to Hazen, this can be especially relevant for utilities considering recycled water storage as part of indirect potable reuse and surface water augmentation programs. The project also resulted in a new screening tool called QL-FeaST to help identify local options for potential water storage and to explore regional water quality conditions.

Moringa seeds may offer natural way to remove microplastics
Moringa leaves and seeds are best known for their nutritional value. However, moringa seeds are also being studied for their potential role in water purification. Researchers at the Institute of Science and Technology of São Paulo State University in Brazil have demonstrated that Moringa oleifera seed saline extract (MOS-SE) offers a viable and sustainable alternative to conventional aluminum-based coagulants for removing PVC microplastics from drinking water. Published in ACS Omega, key findings establish that MOS-SE achieves removal efficiency greater than 98%, comparable to that of alum, while being effective across a broader pH range—offering significant operational advantages for water treatment facilities. Moreover, demonstration that in-line filtration performs equivalently to direct filtration eliminates the need for energy-intensive flocculation, reducing both capital and operational costs.
