American Water and Essential Utilities to merge

American Water Works Company Inc. (Camden, N.J) and Essential Utilities Inc. (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) have agreed to merge, forming the nation’s largest regulated water and wastewater public utility with a pro forma market capitalization of approximately $40 billion and a combined enterprise value of approximately $63 billion. The merged company will serve 4.7 million water and wastewater connections across 17 states and have a combined water and wastewater rate base of approximately $29.3 billion. Both companies date back to 1886. American Water President and Chief Executive Officer John C. Griffith said, “By joining forces with Essential, the combined company’s enhanced scale and operational efficiency will support continued investment in our critical infrastructure, enabling us to continue providing superior customer service at affordable rates.” Griffith will serve as president and CEO of the combined company, which will take the American Water name. 

Clean Harbors reports revenue of $1.55B with strong growth in Technical Services and Safety-Kleen

Clean Harbors Inc. (Norwell, Mass.), a leading provider of environmental and industrial services throughout North America, announced revenues of $1.55 billion for the third quarter ended September 30, 2025, compared with $1.53 billion in the same period of 2024. In the Environmental Services segment, 3% top-line growth was led by Technical Services, which grew 12% despite slowdowns in some key verticals such as chemicals due to general economic conditions and tariff-related uncertainty. Offsetting these slowdowns was significant growth from other verticals, increased remediation and waste project work, and demand for the company’s Total PFAS Solution. Safety-Kleen Environmental Services revenue rose 8% through a combination of price and steady volume growth. “Looking ahead, we believe that the market challenges we faced in the third quarter are temporary and brought on by macro-economic conditions. The continued growth in Technical Services and Safety-Kleen Environmental demonstrates the diversification of our end markets and continued resilience of our business model,” said Eric Gerstenberg, co-chief executive officer. “We expect our incinerators to continue to run strong through year-end and projects to continue to feed our entire disposal and recycling network.” 

Clean Earth installs new foam fractionation unit for PFAS

Clean Earth (King of Prussia, Pa.), a division of Enviri Corporation and a provider of environmental and regulated waste management services, announced the installation of a surface-activated foam fractionation unit at its Detroit, Mich. facility. The unit is engineered to remove surface-active compounds such as PFAS from aqueous materials. The technology separates PFAS from incoming effluent, while the facility’s integrated treatment processes target additional contaminants and apply final polishing steps to ensure the treated water meets discharge standards. “PFAS contamination is one of the most urgent environmental challenges facing our world today, and the integration of this foam fractionation unit reflects our commitment to innovation and leadership in sustainable remediation,” said Clean Earth President Jeff Beswick.

InnSure and Stantec announce partnership

Stantec (Edmonton, Canada) and InnSure (Cambridge, Mass.), a nonprofit operating in climate-change-related insurance and risk financing, announced a partnership to help communities mitigate the impacts and costs of extreme weather events. The insurance protection gap—the difference between total economic losses from disasters and the portion covered by insurance—is expected to grow as floods, hurricanes, and wildfires increase. Recent research from insurance risk advisor Aon estimated $223 billion in uninsured losses in 2024. InnSure and Stantec will collaborate on insurability planning and community resilience initiatives using a total cost of risk (TCOR) simulator that quantifies community costs across economic loss, climate adaptation, and insurance. 

GEI to provide construction management for dam seismic retrofit

The Santa Clara Valley Water District has selected GEI Consultants Inc. (Woburn, Mass.) to provide construction management for the Anderson Dam Seismic Retrofit Project. The project will involve removing most of the existing embankment dam and replacing it with a new dam that meets updated seismic safety standards. Originally built in 1950, the Anderson Dam is the largest reservoir in Valley Water’s service area. GEI will oversee construction of the new dam embankment, spillway, high-level and low-level outlet works, pipeline realignments, and modifications to roadways and recreational facilities. “This project represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to strengthen critical water infrastructure and enhance public safety for the communities of Santa Clara County,” said Violletta McDaniel, Vice President and Construction Management Practice Leader at GEI.

Trinity expands hydrology and restoration capabilities

Trinity Consultants (Dallas), a global environmental consulting firm, announced the acquisition of GeoSystems Analysis Inc. (GSA, Tucson, Ariz.), a hydrology and natural resources consultancy with offices in Arizona, New Mexico and Oregon and additional resources in Nevada and Peru. Founded in 1994, GSA joins Trinity’s Water & Ecology team from previous acquisitions of Zanjero, WestLand Engineering & Environmental Services, Soundview Consultants, Ecofish Research, Minnow Environmental, AWN Consulting, Vision Environment and ECOSA. GSA’s services include groundwater recharge, mine reclamation and hydrology, habitat restoration, watershed and conservation planning, and monitoring programs. The company also has a soil physics laboratory at its headquarters. GSA’s leadership team will remain in place.

Terraphase pursues strategic expansion with Eolas Environmental

Terraphase Engineering Inc. (Oakland, Calif.), a national environmental consulting firm, has acquired Eolas Environmental, LLC, an environmental consultancy operating in Connecticut and Massachusetts. The acquisition enhances Terraphase’s capabilities in site investigation, remediation, and regulatory compliance while expanding its regional presence. Eolas leadership will remain in place. With this acquisition, Terraphase now operates over 15 offices nationwide, continuing its strategic expansion across the United States.

Tighe & Bond acquires Geosphere Environmental

Tighe & Bond (Westfield, Mass.) announced the acquisition of hydrogeology and environmental firm Geosphere Environmental Management Inc. (Exeter, N.H.). With service offerings in hydrogeology, geothermal, and environmental science, Geosphere’s client base includes public municipal and utility, as well as private sector clients. The addition—notably Geosphere’s water supply development and groundwater discharge capabilities—complements Tighe & Bond’s Water Business Line. In addition, Geosphere’s geothermal and ground heat exchange expertise aligns with Tighe & Bond’s “whole asset approach” to the built environment.

Safe T Professionals joins Gallagher Bassett

Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. (Rolling Meadows, Ill.) announced that its claims and risk management solutions subsidiary, Gallagher Bassett, has acquired 100% of Safe T Professionals LLC (Chandler, Ariz.). Gallagher Bassett previously held a minority investment in the business. Terms were not disclosed. Safe T Professionals provides environmental, health and safety management and staffing services in the construction and manufacturing sectors nationwide with a focus on the Southwest and Western United States.

USGS funds research into critical minerals in mine waste

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has awarded nearly $3 million in cooperative agreements to 13 state geological surveys to study critical minerals in the materials left over from mining at active and legacy sites. “The USGS is mapping the critical minerals needed for the U.S. economy and national security across the country. Mine waste from former and active mines is an accessible, aboveground source of those minerals, and these agreements allow the states to collaborate with us on work that’s important for the nation – with potential to offset the cost of cleanup, and grow the mineral economy in their states,” said Jamey Jones, science coordinator of the USGS Earth Mapping Resources Initiative.

Burns & McDonnell undertakes construction at Illinois solar project

Geronimo Power (Minneapolis, Minn.) announced the start of onsite construction at its 150-megawatt Bee Hollow Solar project in St. Clair County, Ill. Bee Hollow is anticipated to contribute $54 million in direct economic impact to the local area, including $17 million in new tax revenue. Construction will be performed by Burns & McDonnell (Kansas City, Mo.) and will sustain upwards of 200 construction jobs during the process. Slated to begin operating in late 2026, Bee Hollow is expected to generate enough clean, renewable local energy to provide the equivalent electrical usage of an estimated 45,600 homes each year. A power purchase agreement with the Illinois Municipal Electric Agency was announced earlier.

Jacobs to support Ireland’s energy transition

Jacobs (Dallas) has been selected by EirGrid, manager of the Irish national grid, for a five-year Engineering Design, Planning and Project Management Framework with an option for an additional three years to provide technical services. Jacobs will help to deliver EirGrid’s strategy to transform the electricity transmission system while meeting Ireland’s renewable ambitions for 2030. Through the Framework, Jacobs will form an integrated design team for the Transmission System Operator to provide end-to-end services in planning, design and project management for high-voltage transmission infrastructure. This includes both overground and underground assets, and high-voltage alternating current and high-voltage direct current technologies.

Return to growth for Arcadis in Q3 2025 

Arcadis (Amsterdam, Netherlands) reported net revenues of €936 million in Q3 2025, delivering organic growth of 1% year on year and continued progress on strategic initiatives. “Arcadis delivered solid results in the third quarter of 2025, supported by continued strong demand in our key markets North America and Europe. Leading positions in high-growth markets such as Energy, Water, Climate and Technology continued to drive performance. Large Mobility projects in North America secured last year saw further gradual ramp up over the quarter, supporting growth,” said Arcadis CEO Alan Brookes. Arcadis reported that its Resilience business (37% of net revenues) continued to see good momentum, driven by strong demand in North America, Germany, and the Netherlands, underpinned by leading positions in Water, Climate, and Energy. In the United States, Water solutions’ performance continued to be very strong, while the winding down of some remediation activities affected revenues.

Tetra Tech awarded £17M water contract in UK

Tetra Tech Inc. (Pasadena, Calif.) announced that Portsmouth Water in the UK has selected it to provide engineering design and technical support to deliver resilient water service to customers in Southern England and meet new regulatory targets. Tetra Tech’s water engineers will design high-end solutions to improve critical infrastructure including reservoirs, pipes, and treatment plants that serve more than 700,000 people. “Our experts will provide strategic advisory services to modernize water delivery networks and implement advanced asset management systems. This work builds on more than a decade of using our WaterNet digital platform to support network maintenance and leakage analytics for Portsmouth Water,” stated Tetra Tech.

EPA resources help protect water systems from cyber attacks

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released new and updated planning tools to help water systems prevent and respond to cybersecurity incidents. EPA has developed the following resources: Emergency Response Plan Guide for Wastewater Utilities; Template for Developing an Incident Response Plan; Incident Action Checklists; and a Cybersecurity Procurement Checklist. In August, EPA announced over $9 million in grant funding for midsize and large water systems to help protect drinking water from cybersecurity threats and improve resiliency for extreme weather events.

Bay scallops surge thanks to seagrass restoration

Virginia’s bay scallop population is experiencing an unprecedented resurgence, according to the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS). Thanks to dedicated restoration work led by the Batten School & VIMS Eastern Shore Laboratory, bay scallops, once locally extinct due to habitat loss, are now multiplying exponentially in the restored eelgrass meadows of the Eastern Shore’s southern coastal bays. Bay scallops (Argopecten irradians) once thrived in Virginia waters until an eelgrass wasting disease in the 1930s decimated their natural habitat. For approximately 90 years, the species was absent from the Commonwealth’s coastal bays. However, in 1997, Batten School & VIMS researchers launched a seed-based submerged aquatic vegetation restoration project now described as the largest and most successful seagrass restoration in the world.
