Oceanites is a nongovernmental organization with a huge mission of monitoring penguin population changes in the Antarctic Peninsula and increasing penguin habitat and climate change awareness worldwide.
As well as on-the-ground censusing of penguin nests and chicks for 30 years, Oceanites uses cutting-edge drone and satellite technology to monitor changes. These data assist and help ensure the adoption of science-based conservation recommendations in Antarctica.
Oceanites serves as an independent, non-governmental observer at meetings of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), which oversees and regulates fishing activities in Antarctica. Everyone in the Antarctic Treaty system (56 countries) relies upon the scientific data provided by Oceanites, including the State of Antarctic Penguins reports.
Over the past 30 years, via its Antarctic Site Inventory project (ASI), Oceanites has worked to protect the Antarctic environment. Oceanites has made more than 2,400 site visits to more than 250 different peninsula locations.
